Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — the same carbon crystal, hardness and fire as mined stones — created in a controlled environment. Here is how they compare, and how to buy with confidence.
Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds
| Lab-grown | Natural | |
|---|---|---|
| Composition | Pure crystallized carbon | Pure crystallized carbon |
| Hardness (Mohs) | 10 | 10 |
| Origin | Grown in a laboratory (CVD or HPHT) in weeks | Formed deep in the earth over billions of years |
| Look | Indistinguishable to the eye | Indistinguishable to the eye |
| Grading | 4Cs — commonly graded by IGI and GIA | 4Cs — commonly graded by GIA and IGI |
| Price | Typically lower for the same size and quality | Typically higher; rarity drives value |
| Resale | Generally lower and less predictable | Established secondary market |
Certification: IGI & GIA
IGI
The International Gemological Institute grades a large share of lab-grown diamonds. Its reports state the stone is laboratory-grown and document cut, color, clarity and carat, often with a laser inscription on the girdle.
GIA
The Gemological Institute of America issues reports for laboratory-grown diamonds that identify origin and describe the stone’s quality characteristics.
Always ask for the grading report and match the report number to the inscription on the stone.

Lab-Grown Diamond FAQ
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are crystallized carbon with the same physical, chemical and optical properties as mined diamonds. The difference is origin: they are grown in a controlled laboratory environment rather than formed underground.
Can you tell a lab-grown diamond from a natural one?
Not by eye. Gemological laboratories identify origin with specialized equipment, and certified lab-grown diamonds carry a report stating they are laboratory-grown.
Which certificates should I look for?
IGI (International Gemological Institute) and GIA (Gemological Institute of America) both grade lab-grown diamonds on cut, color, clarity and carat. Ask us for the grading report of any stone you are considering.
Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?
Lab-grown diamonds typically cost less than natural diamonds of similar size and quality, and their resale value is generally lower and less predictable. Choose the diamond you love for how it looks and fits your budget.
Can I choose a lab-grown center stone for a custom ring?
Yes — our ring builder lets you compare natural and lab-grown options, and our designers can walk you through stones in person.
